I just graduated this past May from The Ohio State University (OSU) with two majors, journalism and Chinese. While I was working at The Lantern (OSU’s student newspaper), my first role that I had there was a feature writer for the Arts & Entertainment section. I got to speak to artists and musicians and other creative individuals both at Ohio State and in Columbus, and I loved it. I loved sharing their stories with people and trying to get the word out there about their work and how they create such amazing things. So, when it came time to look for jobs, I saw that this position blended my love of storytelling with my love of art and the passion I feel for sharing the work and accomplishments of others.

Q: At The Lantern, you were an Arts & Entertainment feature writer before becoming Editor-in-Chief. Have you always had a passion for art?
Well, I’ve always liked going to art galleries. I’ve always found (and I think a lot of people probably feel this way too) that it’s nice to know the stories behind what inspired someone to create something, how they created it, or just their training and how they got to this point in their career. I’ve always been interested in the backstories of why something was created. That’s always in the back of my mind when I go to galleries with my parents on vacation or go to the different galleries around town.

Q: Are you an artist?
I’m not an artist myself. I don’t draw or paint anything, and while I studied piano and French horn as a student, I wouldn’t call myself a professional musician. I’m always looking for new ways to express myself, but for most of my life, it’s been through written words. I have an appreciation for art, but I am not blessed with being able to create anything worthy of hanging in a gallery.

Q: Do you have a favorite artist or style?
I like art that draws from news, current topics of conversation, and things that are happening in the world. I think it’s a way to express ideas in a way that is intercultural, crossing boundaries and combining the groups in which we put ourselves. Art can speak to people in different ways, no matter what background they’re coming from. It can be either positive or negative in how it speaks to you; nevertheless, it will elicit some emotion and spark conversations. In a way, I think art is its own way of communicating information and ideas, but it also spurs further exploration of those ideas.

Q: Can you tell us about any major project you are currently working on?
I am hoping to write and share more features that profile the artists and organizations with whom we work. I want to narrate their journey, explain how they came into their art, and share their mission. I think hearing directly from the artists through blog posts, stories, or features is a way to positively engage our audience and help them better understand how the OAC impacts various communities throughout the state of Ohio. I hope it will also introduce readers to things they might not have known about, and connect them to people who they haven’t had the chance to meet in person. I hope it will spark that connection, creativity, or inspiration that they, too, can seek out resources and opportunities that will make their communities better.

Q: Working in an arts organization, what is your day-to-day routine like?
I am in charge of sharing the OAC’s message with the public each day. I put together media releases and story pitches for traditional sources of news like TV stations, radio stations, and newspapers in order to share the work of our constituents, grantees, and partners. I also have a hand in crafting the Council’s social media message. Like any other agency, the OAC is trying to embrace new technologies that establish a personal connection and share with people what we do each day. That emphasizes the importance of social media, working with blogs, or incorporating different ways of telling stories through videos or photo essays. But, most importantly, I am here to share the work that grant recipients do each day, as well as educate our audience about the impact of the arts in our communities.

Q: Speaking of embracing new technology, what’s your favorite social media platform?
Instagram. My Facebook is just my way to share photos because I feel like it’s easier. I’ll share photos on that because I’m always “the friend with the camera.” I always have the DSLR, so I’ll just post photos of friends and our adventures on Facebook. And my mom likes to be able to connect with me on Facebook.
But Instagram is my inspiration board. I like accounts from Japan, Toronto, and Columbus, and I use it to discover colorful and creative things. I can just log on throughout the day and it’s like a breath of fresh air, it’s so pretty and visually pleasing. It’s a way to explore, too. When I travel, I like to use it to find little coffee shops or boutiques whose atmospheres and missions speak to me. It’s fun to do that digitally. It’s a great platform for when I want to take a mental break and stumble upon something new.

Q: So, you use Instagram to stay inspired throughout the day?
Yes, many of the accounts that I follow are by artists, and, while I could never take photos like that, it’s just comforting to know that there are people out there who are supported through social media and who are doing what they love and sharing it. I think Instagram is one of the most positive social media platforms. It’s a way to connect to the world through images and shared experiences.

Q: What do you do when you’re not sharing stories and connecting the OAC with the public?
I am a soccer fan, so I’ll go to Columbus Crew SC home games and watch the U.S. national teams play. It has appeared in picture frames, in collages and as a computer background on my first-ever laptop.

Now, it has appeared once again.

As I look to the future of post-graduation life, these words continue to be a fitting reminder of the importance of confidence and belief in oneself.

After preschool, I would come home and watch Pooh's Grand Adventure on VHS. I would laugh as the movie's cast of adorable animals set off through the Hundred Acre Wood in search of their friend Christopher Robin. My mom would prepare dinner while I watched the well-meaning Owl misread the word "school" as "skull." As a child who loved to read, I was puzzled as to why going to school was such a scary concept. It didn't occur to me that one day, I, too, would have to hug my stuffed animals goodbye, hop onto a yellow bus and trade playdates and make-believe for pencils and mathematics.

Many years later, the quote appeared again, this time plastered on the side of a trunk I decorated with a collage of photos and images clipped from magazines. My best friend, Emily, and I spent hours sitting out on my parents' patio, putting our masterpieces together with the hopes of creating a unique conversation piece. Listening to a playlist of our favorite songs, we chatted about high school memories and cut out colored strips of scrapbook paper, hoping our handiwork would bring a pop of personality to our freshman-year dorm rooms.

After the Mod Podge had dried and the minivan was loaded, my family and I drove to Ohio State on the morning of move-in day. Within an hour, the trunk was deposited with a heavy thud in a crowded room on the 12th floor of Taylor Tower. It would later be transformed into a TV table and makeshift pantry. Yet, the quote was still visible beneath half-empty pizza boxes as friends gathered around to watch Fight Club on our room's tiny 19-inch screen.

Several years later, it was hauled once again through the doorway of my first-ever apartment, where it was used as a coffee table during late-night study sessions. And now, it sits facing the front door of my new apartment, greeting me whenever I come home from work each day.

Christopher Robin's words are comforting as I begin my journey into the working world. I have been very lucky to have an amazing support system of family and friends who have been with me through thick and thin for the past 22 years.

Now I get to put my bravery, strength and smarts to the test, and I couldn't be more excited.

Until next time, though, as Tigger would say, it's "TTFN — ta-ta for now!"

Ohio State School of Communication Undergraduate Awards Ceremony 2017

https://www.amandaweitz.com/blog/ohio-state-school-of-communication-undergraduate-awards-ceremony-2017

https://www.amandaweitz.com/blog/ohio-state-school-of-communication-undergraduate-awards-ceremony-2017#comments

Uncategorized

The Kappa Tau Alpha Top Scholar Award is given by the national journalism and mass communication honorary to the graduating senior from each chapter with the highest grade point average and class ranking. Wolfe Journalism Honor Medal and the Kappa Tau Alpha Top Scholar Award. As a graduating senior, this experience was one of the last I will have as an undergraduate in the journalism program at Ohio State. I could not think of a better way to end an inspiring four years surrounded by outstanding faculty, coworkers and peers.

My involvement with The Lantern, Ohio State's student newspaper, started with a single article about the creation of a massive, hand-painted soccer banner, published in the fall of 2013. Seeing my byline on The Lantern's website was a dream come true and a feat I did not think I could pull off within my freshman year, let alone my first month on campus. The experience of seeing my story — the quotes I painstakingly transcribed, the words I specifically chose to describe the triumphant moment when the tifo was hoisted above the crowd — elicited a smile as I emailed the link to my family and friends.

Seven semesters and almost 100 stories later, I still get excited at the thought of picking up a copy of any publication that contains one of my articles. Since my first semester at Ohio State, I have had many experiences as a student journalist, all of which have taught me skills I might not have learned by just sitting in the classroom taking notes. From covering breaking news events well into the early hours of the morning to watching as thousands of my cap-and-gown-clad peers walk through the 'Shoe, I am proud to identify myself as a journalist, a title that inspires me to document the stories that are most important to those who read the words I write.

Writing and working for publications such as The Lantern, The Arizona Republic, CityScene Magazine and BroadwayWorld.com Columbus has shaped my undergraduate experience in ways that I could not have predicted, and for that I am forever grateful.

As I look ahead to my future as a soon-to-be graduate of Ohio State, I am equally nervous and excited for what is to come. Credit: Amanda Etchison
Amid the frenetic fishmongers bustling to and fro through wet alleyways overflowing with discarded bits of seafood in Tokyo’s famous Tsukiji Fish Market, an interesting sight stood out from the vibrant scene of activity: groups of wide-eyed, camera-toting tourists crowded around the perimeter of the market.

Although hailing from a diverse range of countries, the foreigners were generally easy to recognize in the crowd. Their jeans and t-shirts stood out in stark contrast to the bloodstained aprons of the Tsukiji Market employees, while GoPros and shopping bags served as further visual identification.

As a member of one of the many touring groups meandering through the market, I witnessed mixed reactions to our presence. It ranged from quizzical glances and curious questions to angry shoves and impatient requests to move out of the way.

Our visit to Tsukiji was our first official stop as tourists in Tokyo, and provided valuable insight into how this city is experienced.

The market is a popular destination for both locals and foreigners, and one of many that caters to the millions of tourists who flock to the island nation every month.

According to a May 18 article in The Japan Times, April 2016 saw 2.08 million foreign visitors come into the country, a single-month record.

Throughout the many districts in Tokyo we visited on our first full day in Japan’s capital city, it became obvious that tourism is generally accepted, and, in some cases, even embraced.

From the sparkling interior of the Tokyo Tower to the picturesque grounds of the Imperial Palace, every storefront and street was photo-ready. Most signs, thankfully, were printed in both Japanese and English, and familiar brand names straight from the malls at home illuminated the halls of the Skytree shopping complex in Sumida.

Although there is some comfort in being able to emerge from any given subway station and be immediately confronted with the green and white lettering of a Starbucks, it does make one wonder where the culture of universal marketing and tourist-friendly Japan ends and the authentic Tokyo begins.

Like any large metropolitan hub, Tokyo is a city of myriad stories. And it is through shared, genuine moments between locals and tourists — a conversation with a fish market employee or a friendly smile exchanged between fellow subway passengers that transcends language barriers — that one experiences the true culture that resides and thrives in a location.

The most memorable experiences from this trip so far have been those we’ve encountered while wandering through the streets, taking in the local life that exists away from the perfectly manicured gardens of giant tourist attractions.

One needs only to be open to striking up a conversation on the subway or simply observing the small moments that are glimpsed throughout the day to get a sense of the human story that lies beneath the shiny newness of Tokyo’s streets.

While, at times, being a tourist in city like Tokyo can be equal parts overwhelming, fascinating or scary, it is not that different from other cities around the globe. When you take the time to step back and pay attention to the stories unfolding around you, you’ll find that the heart and soul of Tokyo is actually not that foreign at all.

Gallery

<a href='https://www.amandaweitz.com/uploads/2/2/4/6/22466152/3558256_orig.jpg' rel='lightbox[gallery976673228380594398]' onclick='if (!window.lightboxLoaded) return false' title='The Tokyo Skytree in Sumida, Tokyo, Japan. However, Drake’s raise — a 2 percent increase to his $800,000 base salary, which equates to an additional $16,000 a year — will cover a bit more than a few mochas.

A Lantern analysis of university employees’ base salaries from the past five years shows Drake is one of many high-ranking administrators who are awarded a median salary increase of 2.4 percent each year.

Full-time teaching faculty saw a median pay increase at the same rate: 2.4 percent a year.

When part-time faculty is included, however, the rates are no longer equal. Median salaries for all instructors increased less than 1 percent.

This discrepancy is driven, at least in part, by the increased hiring of part-time teachers at OSU.

At the same time, the number of full-time educators dropped.

Since 2010, OSU more than tripled its part-time teaching workforce. The number of part-time educators on the payroll increased by an average 146 employees each year.

Over the same period, the number of full-time teachers at OSU decreased by an average of 127 educators each year.

Some higher education experts say they have observed this gap between administrative and faculty salaries at other universities throughout the United States.

“We have seen an increase in administrator salaries,” said Samuel Dunietz, a research and policy analyst for the American Association of University Professors. “On a nationwide trend, it has grown much faster than the rate of faculty salary increases.”

Dunietz added that there is also an increase in the number of administrative positions. This is coupled with the hiring of more part-time faculty — a trend that’s hardly limited to OSU.
Pranav Jani is an associate professor in the Department of English. Five years later, this number more than tripled, as OSU employed 882 part-time faculty in 2015.

Coordinating hiring policies across an institution as large as OSU is difficult, Davey said.

“Ohio State is a large, complicated institution with thousands of employees,” Davey said. “Managing the compensation appropriately for all of our employees is an ongoing thing that the administration is actively engaged in and is committed to paying appropriate and fair salaries for all the members of the university community.”

The trend extends far beyond OSU.

Nationally, more than 70 percent of the academic instructional workforce is made up of contingent faculty, Dunietz said.

He added that he thinks the increase in part-time employees has broader implications for students and faculty, as well as society as a whole.

“I think from a public perception point of view, having an increase in administrator salaries, presidential salaries, while at the same time relying on part-time contingent faculty is not really a good narrative to have, necessarily,” he said, explaining that part-time faculty rarely have time to host office hours to aid students outside of class or conduct intensive research-related breakthroughs.

Jani agreed and said he believes that relationships between teachers and students are at “the heart of any university.” He added that he worries these connections are lost as OSU invests more money in part-time faculty than full-time employees.

“By replacing full-time jobs with part-time jobs, by basically hiring people on the cheap, by not supporting their research, not giving them their benefits so they can be secure here, by not giving them tenure … the administration is not only doing a harm for us but for students,” he said.

Source: OSU salary data. Bergmann, then-president of the AAUP and a distinguished professor of economics at American University. “Huge amounts have been devoted to funding administrative positions that a few years ago would have been thought unnecessary … But the bloating of college administrations over the past decades has made administrative performance worse rather than better.”

More than 20 years later, the AAUP’s 2013-14 report showed that full-time, nonfaculty professionals — which the report says includes individuals such as buyers and purchasing agents, human resources employees, lawyers and “other non-academic workers” — showed the most growth between 1975 and 2011. This group of employees grew 369 percent during that time period while full-time senior administrative positions increased 141 percent.

“I think what we’ve seen is that there has been a number of new positions that have been created. In the face of decreasing state appropriations, there are budget implications that come into play,” Dunietz said. “What we are worried about is that is coming at a cost of inhibiting faculty develop, which also inhibits student success. It creates a barrier to student success.”

Some, like Joanne McGoldrick, the associate vice president for total rewards within OSU’s Office of Human Resources, justify high administrator salaries by citing the round-the-clock nature of those positions.

“A president of a university such as Ohio State is a 7/24 position,” she said. “He or she … is dealing with a community, both nationally and locally, and internationally, and is required to be a fundraiser, a politician, an educator, so salaries of that type of individual would definitely be at a certain rate.”

The Board of Trustees and the Talent and Compensation Committee recently launched a new initiative to address starting salaries for future administrators at the university. The plan will move starting salaries for top administrators closer to the median value for comparable positions at similar universities across the country.

“We are going to establish what the market is paying for any particular position at the senior executive level and when we bring in new people, we will target the median of that market that has been identified empirically,” Davey said.

“That represents a pretty significant shift for the university because previous to the implementation of that system, under Gordon Gee’s leadership, the university targeted the 75th percentile of the market. That is a really significant difference.”

Under the new initiative, salaries will shift to the 50th to 60th percentile, Davey said.

Davey added that over the last fiscal year, members of the president’s cabinet received no raise and one executive voluntarily took a 5 percent salary cut.

“That is important to note as part of the university’s overall commitment to managing compensation in a way that is frugal and aligned with the market and reflective of our values as an institution,” he said. “As contracts for senior executives are coming up for renewal, each one is being examined with an eye towards our compensation philosophy.”

Starting salaries

OSU determines faculty salaries based on a variety of factors, McGoldrick said. These include an evaluation of the market value of jobs, as well as the qualifications of individual candidates.

“With compensation, people think it is a science, and it is. It is very data-driven, but at some point there is art in it as well because you are involving people and what they bring and their experiences,” McGoldrick said.

The university completes surveys and also analyzes data from organizations such as the Association of American Universities to determine compensation benchmarks for certain positions, McGoldrick said.

“When we go to hire a professor, we have an idea of what the market will bear,” she said.

McGoldrick added that the differences in starting salaries emerge from factors such as an individual’s years of experience, as well as the research opportunities he or she brings to the university.

Movin’ on up

At OSU, raises are awarded on an annual basis and are determined through performance reviews, according to a letter from former Executive Vice President and Provost Joseph Steinmetz to vice presidents, deans, department chairs and school directors.

McGoldrick said the letter, which is sent out annually by the provost, details the merit compensation process.
“The board, along with finance and others, weigh in and determine what the university can afford in relation to a merit increase,” she said. “And then each department has to fund for it.”

Steinmetz’s July 2015 letter outlines the process by which departments must budget 2 percent of their payroll for merit-based increases in pay. An additional 1 percent is available for “one-time payments to regular faculty beyond the regular merit pool,” the letter stated.

The decision to award an individual a merit-based increase is determined by whether he or she has met specific goals, McGoldrick said.

These objectives vary from individual to individual, and employees are often working toward completing a piece of a larger goal, McGoldrick added.

“My goals in HR cascade up to my senior leader. But those senior leader goals are broad, and each person has a piece of the goal … We may have a broad objective of ‘compliance’ in HR, but each one of us takes a piece,” she said. “In the professorial roles, it could be anywhere across the board. They may say that they are going to teach so many classes or they are going to do so much research.”

Based on the goals identified, the individual’s ability to reach these goals is assessed on multiple performance scales, McGoldrick said.

“And then the individual’s leader sits down at the end of the year and has a discussion and then decides what to award,” she said. “And then a determination is made, and that is an annual award.”

In his letter, Steinmetz explained that some faculty members will receive raises and others will not.

“The aggregate merit pool should in no way be viewed as floor for merit increases or as entitlement for ‘just being employed,’” he wrote. “We also expect that there will be employees who receive no merit increase because their base pay is already commensurate with market or because their performance does not justify an increase.”

Source: OSU salary data.
